Product Development
Our major business goal is the preservation of Barrie Sutherland's 35mm film-based historical images from the 1960s. These were captured on black and white (B&W), and colour transparency film using a Minolta SR1 and Nikonos underwater camera. The films Barrie used were mostly Ilford FP3, Kodacolour, Agfa and Anscochrome.

Barrie processed the B&W films himself, initially using Ilford ID11 developer and then changing to Microfin. The switch to Microfin produced the beautiful fine-grained images after 1965. The colour transparencies were processed at Kodak and Agfa colour laboratories. Barrie's images are a valuable archive that document the history of Victorian surfing along the Surf Coast during the 1960s.

The preservation process is critical to achieving the highest quality results in conversion to digital formats. Each image is scanned at 2400dpi on a virtual drum scanner to exacting standards. After scanning, the image processing is closely mapped to the dark-room process Barrie used. The original 35mm image format is always retained. Image cropping is only done to straighten horizons. Images are adjusted for tonal and colour textures using Adobe's Photoshop as the digital darkroom. The exacting standards ensure images are cleaned of any dust, spotting marks, defects, and brightness, contrast, "burning and dodging" and colour saturation replicate the original image. Every image scanned is proof-printed for final review by Barrie.
